Central Indiana and Indianapolis News Alert: Freezing Rain Forecasted with Updates on Indiana Weather and Traffic

Indiana experienced a brief dose of winter precipitation on Wednesday after a spring-like start to the first week of February. Central Indiana saw a window of freezing rain in the afternoon before transitioning to regular rain. Freezing rain occurs when precipitation falls into a warm-than-freezing layer and then freezes on contact with below-freezing surfaces, creating ice. Some parts of northern Indiana may see sleet, which forms when snow melts as it falls through a warmer layer, but doesn’t fully melt before reaching the surface, resulting in pellets of translucent ice.

The system on Wednesday brought light freezing rain to central Indiana, with less than 0.10″ expected, causing minimal impacts other than some slick spots. The Storm Track 8 weather blog provided more information on the timing of the precipitation. Despite the temporary return of winter weather, Indiana residents can expect a continuation of the spring-like conditions that marked the beginning of the month.
