Former Indiana University basketball players accuse doctor of abuse, deemed mentally fit

Dr. Bradford Bomba Sr., an 88-year-old doctor accused of sexually assaulting Indiana University basketball players in the 1990s, will be questioned Wednesday after a judge deemed him competent to be deposed. Despite claims from Bomba’s guardian that he couldn’t tell the truth from a lie, the judge ruled otherwise based on his education, understanding, comfort, and confidence during questioning.

The lawsuit filed by former players Haris Mujezinovic and Charlie Miller alleges that Bomba subjected basketball players to unnecessary prostate examinations while coaches and trainers turned a blind eye. The lawsuit also alleges that there could be “at least one hundred” victims and accuses Indiana University of Title IX violations for failing to protect students.

Bomba, who served as the basketball team’s doctor from 1979 to the late 1990s, is accused of routinely subjecting players to invasive and abusive rectal examinations. The lawsuit also claims that these assaults were openly discussed among players and IU employees, yet no action was taken.

Mujezinovic and Miller are seeking unspecified damages and have urged former teammates to come forward and join their lawsuit. The allegations against Bomba and the university are reminiscent of a scandal at Ohio State University involving a team doctor who was accused of preying on wrestlers with coaches allegedly aware but failing to act. Indiana University, represented by the law firm Barnes & Thornburg, hired Bomba to provide medical care to sports teams for several decades.
