New NASA Technology for Wildfire Monitoring Using Drones


NASA, in collaboration with the wildfire response community, is developing new technologies to enhance aerial firefighting operations, particularly at night. A key focus is on testing airspace management systems that enable drones and remotely piloted aircraft to operate safely in low visibility conditions. The Advanced Capabilities for Emergency Response Operations (ACERO) project within NASA’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate aims to provide tools for 24-hour drone operations for wildfire response.

One of the innovations being tested is the Portable Airspace Management System (PAMS), which helps drone pilots safely deploy aircraft for wildfire response. Each PAMS unit is equipped with a computer for airspace management, a radio for communication among units, and an ADS-B receiver to track nearby air traffic. With a focus on preventing airborne collisions and providing essential fire and weather information, PAMS enhances aerial coordination during firefighting operations.

NASA researchers conducted successful tests at various locations across the country, including NASA’s Ames Research Center and Langley Research Center, as well as Monterey Bay Academy Airport. By simulating real-world firefighting scenarios and using a mesh radio network for communication, the tests demonstrated the effectiveness of PAMS in improving aerial coordination during wildfires.

Looking ahead, the ACERO team plans further flight evaluations to refine these technologies with the goal of transferring them to firefighting agencies for operational use. This initiative falls under NASA’s broader efforts to support the Advanced Air Mobility mission. With advancements in airspace management systems, the future of aerial firefighting operations looks promising in terms of enhancing safety and effectiveness.
