Newly inaugurated Indiana governor eliminates Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion practices in state government – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

Newly sworn-in Indiana Gov. Mike Braun has issued an executive order eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion practices within the state government. The order, which replaces DEI with MEI (merit, excellence, and innovation), aims to ensure equality of opportunity for all Hoosiers. Under the order, state agencies are prohibited from supporting DEI practices that grant preferential treatment based on race, color, ethnicity, or national origin, as well as from mandating diversity statements or pronoun disclosure.

Agencies are required to review their DEI programs for compliance and make necessary revisions by April 30. The order also closes the Chief Equity, Inclusion, and Opportunity Office in the Governor’s Office. However, it does not specify what MEI programs will entail or how they will be implemented.

Critics, including NAACP legal counsel TyJuan Garrett and Rep. Robin Shackleford, have expressed concerns about the potential loss of diversity of thought and the impact on minority-owned businesses. Shackleford believes the order sends a negative message about Indiana’s openness and diversity.

Braun defended the order as a way to make state government more cost-effective and responsive. The executive order is one of 19 orders signed by Braun on Wednesday, which also include initiatives to reduce licensing requirements, eliminate educational requirements for state jobs, and create new offices.

The move to eliminate DEI practices in Indiana’s government has sparked controversy and debate among lawmakers and advocates for diversity and inclusion. Braun’s decision to replace DEI with MEI has raised questions about the potential impact on diversity and equity within the state.
