Judge allows Trump’s ambitious initiative to encourage federal workers to step down to advance

A federal judge in Boston has lifted a temporary freeze on the Trump administration’s offer for federal workers to resign, allowing the controversial “fork in the road” program to proceed. U.S. District Judge George A. O’Toole Jr. had stopped the offer last week after unions sued, claiming the administration did not have the legal authority to offer buyouts. In his ruling, O’Toole found that the unions lacked standing to bring the suit. President Trump praised the judge’s action, while the unions involved called it a setback but vowed to continue fighting. The Office of Personnel Management had extended the offer to employees in a Jan. 28 email, allowing them to resign now but get paid through September. Some legal experts have raised concerns about the validity of the offer, and Education Department staffers were warned that the administration could cancel the plan. A senior administration official estimated that 5% to 10% of the federal workforce could resign, leading to potential savings of $100 billion. At the time the program was frozen, 60,000 workers had accepted the deal. While most full-time federal employees were eligible for the offer, there were exceptions for members of the military, U.S. Postal Service employees, and others in specific roles.
