Putin agrees to start talks with Trump to end war in Ukraine

US President Donald Trump had a “lengthy and highly productive” phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where they agreed to begin negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that they invited each other to visit their respective capitals while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke with Trump about a “lasting, reliable peace”. Trump later stated that it was unlikely Ukraine would join Nato, a sentiment echoed by his Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth at a Nato summit. The UK government expressed continued support for Ukraine’s defense against Russia, with Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner stating that London’s backing remains steadfast.

Following the call, Zelensky expressed the importance of the US being part of any security package for his country and discussed potential territorial exchanges between Ukraine and Russia as part of a peace deal. However, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that exchanging Russian-held territory in Ukraine for Ukrainian-held territory in Russia was “impossible”.

The conflict in Ukraine has resulted in significant casualties and displacement of civilians. Estimates suggest hundreds of thousands of people, mostly soldiers, have been killed or injured, and millions of Ukrainian civilians have become refugees. The ongoing conflict has raised concerns about the possibility of a new presidential election in Ukraine and questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy to negotiate with Moscow. Despite the challenges, Zelensky emphasized the importance of working towards lasting peace and security in the region.
