Indiana men’s basketball fans who were hoping for Brad Stevens to replace Mike Woodson as head coach will be disappointed to hear that the Boston Celtics president of basketball operations is not a candidate for the job. Stevens confirmed this in a statement to The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman, expressing his love for the Celtics and his colleagues.
Woodson announced his decision to step down as Indiana head coach at the end of the season, leaving the Hoosiers with a 15-10 overall record. The team has struggled in Big Ten play, currently with a 6-8 conference record. There has been no confirmation on whether Indiana athletic director Scott Dolson reached out to Stevens regarding the vacant head coach position in Bloomington.
Stevens, an Indiana native, enjoyed a successful coaching career at Butler before becoming the Celtics head coach in 2013. He led Boston to six postseason appearances in seven seasons before moving up to president of basketball operations. Under his leadership, the Celtics made it to the 2022 NBA Finals and Stevens was named NBA Executive of the Year.
With Stevens out of the running, Indiana will have to explore other options to fill the head coach opening. Potential candidates rumored to be considered include UCLA’s Mick Cronin and Michigan’s Dusty May, an Indiana alum and former student manager under Bob Knight. Fans will have to wait and see who ultimately takes on the role as the new head coach of the Hoosiers.
