The European Union has pledged to boost security in the Baltic Sea after a new cable break was reported by Swedish authorities, adding to a series of recent incidents involving damage to underwater infrastructure in the region. The European Commission has promised to take measures to prevent and detect threats to submarine cables that carry internet traffic.
The severing of multiple undersea cables in the Baltic Sea has raised concerns that Russia may be retaliating against NATO countries that supported Ukraine. NATO has increased its military presence in the area with a new patrol and surveillance operation called Baltic Sentry to protect the sea’s infrastructure.
The damaged cable, believed to be the C-Lion1 which connects Finland and Germany, experienced minor damage according to its owner Cinia. Swedish police have opened an investigation into the incident, citing the serious security situation in the region.
Finnish authorities are also involved, as the C-Lion1 suffered disruptions in December and November due to probable cable cuts. In a separate incident, the Finnish authorities seized an oil tanker suspected of cutting vital underwater cables, leading to suspicions of Russian involvement.
If Russia is found to be sabotaging critical infrastructure in Europe, it would signify an escalation in its conflict with the West. Sweden, a NATO member since 2023, has been investigating multiple instances of damage to undersea cables in the region, suggesting increasing tensions in the area.
