The Virginia General Assembly has proposed a budget that allocates at least $25 million to drive science, medical, and economic development in Southwest Virginia. The earmarks include $15 million for upgrades to a site in Pulaski County that may house a data center, $6.5 million to expand the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, and $4 million to add clean room spaces to an incubator lab project in Roanoke.
The budget conference report, the result of negotiations among 11 House of Delegates and Senate members, also includes funding for other local projects such as the Blue Highway Festival in Wise County, a medical glove factory in Wythe County, and education initiatives like an aviation maintenance facility at Danville Community College.
The proposed budget aims to boost infrastructure and innovation in the region, with investments in key sectors like healthcare, technology, and education. If approved by the House and Senate, the budget bill will go to Governor Glenn Youngkin’s desk for final approval. The funding will help stimulate the economy, create jobs, and foster growth in Southwest Virginia’s emerging industries.
