A recent Consumer Reports investigation has revealed that online shoppers may be at risk of purchasing unsafe bike helmets from popular online marketplaces. According to the investigation, out of 21 helmets purchased from websites like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Shein, Temu, and Walmart, eight did not meet federal safety standards. While some platforms like Walmart, Temu, and Shein have responded by removing non-compliant listings, others like Meta, the owner of Facebook Marketplace, have not addressed the issue.
The investigation highlighted a major loophole in online platforms that allow third-party sellers to list products without proper safety checks. Consumers are advised to be cautious when buying helmets online and to check seller credentials, purchase from trusted stores, or use official stores on sites like Amazon or eBay. Consumers should also be wary of extremely low prices and should check for specific CPSC labeling on helmets to ensure they meet safety standards. Experts recommend visiting a local bike shop to try on helmets in person and get expert advice to ensure proper protection.
As the investigation reveals the dangers of purchasing unsafe helmets online, Consumer Reports urges consumers to prioritize their safety over online bargains and take necessary precautions when buying safety equipment.
