Indianapolis attorney Grady Ray has resigned from the Indiana bar after the Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission filed a professional misconduct complaint against him. The complaint alleged that Ray failed to file paperwork in a timely manner and was non-responsive to clients in three immigration-related cases. In one case, the untimely filing of paperwork led to a Guatemalan family being unable to pursue asylum, resulting in the client having to defend himself against deportation.
The Indiana Supreme Court accepted Ray’s resignation, effective immediately. Ray, who was admitted to the bar in 1998, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The disciplinary commission’s complaint detailed instances where clients were left in difficult situations due to Ray’s negligence.
One case involved a Guatemalan man, his wife, and young daughter who entered the United States seeking asylum. Despite being assured that their paperwork had been filed, it was not submitted until months later. This delay left the family in a position where they had to defend themselves against deportation and demonstrate their asylum claim.
Ray’s resignation, under Indiana Admission and Discipline Rule 23(17), means that any pending disciplinary proceedings against him are dismissed. He is ineligible to petition for reinstatement for five years. The disciplinary commission’s investigation into Ray’s misconduct highlights the importance of legal professionals fulfilling their obligations to clients in a timely and responsive manner. Chief Justice Loretta Rush issued the disciplinary order, with all justices concurring.
