DOGE employee ordered to testify in lawsuit against the Trump administration by judge

A federal judge has ordered an official from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to testify and provide documents in response to a lawsuit filed by the American Federation of Labor and other unions against the Trump administration. The unions are seeking to block DOGE from accessing sensitive Labor Department data, citing violations of the Privacy Act and the Administrative Procedure Act. Judge John Bates characterized DOGE as “opaque” and expressed an interest in its structure and authority.

Bates granted a request for depositions with staffers from various government agencies, including DOGE, limiting the unions to eight hours total for the four depositions. The demand for information largely pertains to individuals’ identities and documents referenced in the defendants’ own declarations. The lawsuit is part of over 20 legal challenges against DOGE, accusing the organization of federal law violations and lack of transparency.

The Center for Biological Diversity filed a similar lawsuit seeking information under the Freedom of Information Act related to the renamed United States DOGE Service. Congressional Republicans are also pushing for greater transparency at DOGE. The Trump administration has denied claims of transparency issues, pointing to the organization’s website and Musk’s posts on the X platform.

The labor groups suing DOGE expressed concerns about potential conflicts of interest and access to sensitive information, including data on federal workers and investigations related to Musk’s corporate interests. Trump has defended Musk’s role at DOGE, acknowledging criticism while praising his efforts. The White House stated that Amy Gleason holds the title of acting DOGE administrator, implying leadership within the organization.
