Indiana House lawmakers, alongside Helping Veterans and Families of Indiana, have initiated a donation drive to support veterans in need. The effort aims to collect essential food, clothing, hygiene items, and monetary donations through March. The nonprofit began this initiative following a fire at an apartment property operated by HVAF which displaced 48 veterans on October 26.
House Speaker Todd Huston emphasized the importance of supporting veterans who have dedicated their lives to defending the state and the country. Donation bins have been set up outside the House chamber on the third floor, and in the South Atrium on the fourth floor of the Indiana Statehouse for drop-off convenience.
The initiative follows a report by I-Team 8 in November, highlighting that Indiana landlords are allowed to refuse housing subsidies from HVAF clients. State lawmakers and members of the community are encouraged to support HVAF and veterans in need through this donation drive.
The donation drive will provide essential support to veterans struggling in the community, especially those impacted by the recent displacement. With the help of legislators and Hoosiers alike, this initiative aims to make a significant impact in the lives of veterans in need.
