Attorney Michelle Simpson Tuegel recently discussed new allegations of sexual abuse by former Indiana University Dr. Brad Bomba Sr. with 13News. Three former IU basketball players have come forward, including Haris Mujezinovic and Charlie Miller, who played for the team in the 1990s. A lawsuit filed against the IU Board of Trustees by attorney Kathleen DeLaney accuses the university of failing to prevent Dr. Bomba’s misconduct and perpetuating a culture of indifference.
Another player, identified as John Doe, is represented by Tuegel and is also seeking a potential civil claim against IU. The investigation will review the conduct of medical professionals and university officials, as well as what actions were taken when the abuse was reported. Tuegel believes that this case will be a significant reckoning with sexual abuse in basketball at a prestigious university level.
IU has retained an international law firm to conduct an internal review, which will include determining whether the conduct was appropriate and who was aware of it. Tuegel hopes to collaborate with other attorneys on the case and participate in depositions related to the lawsuit. She emphasizes that the exams performed by Dr. Bomba were not medically necessary, according to experts, and believes that the larger environment at IU during that time will be relevant to the investigation.
