Tehran singer arrested while performing live

Iranian singer Hiva Seyfizadeh was arrested in Tehran for organizing an unlicensed concert and being the sole female singer in the presence of men. Seyfizadeh and her group were released on bail, while the concert organizer remains in custody. The venue where the event took place, Emarat Rooberoo, is in Tehran’s cultural hub and was shut down after the incident. The cyber police also took over Seyfizadeh’s and the venue’s Instagram accounts due to content that allegedly goes against public morality and ethics.

Seyfizadeh has faced scrutiny in the past for performing without the mandatory hijab. In December, another woman, Parastoo Ahmadi, was arrested for posting a video of herself singing without a hijab on YouTube. Ahmadi’s video went viral, and she faced severe punishment under a law that imposes harsh penalties on women who do not wear hijabs in public. This law has sparked national uproar in Iran, especially following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody after being arrested for not wearing her hijab properly.

The Iranian government has faced backlash for its treatment of women’s rights issues, with many accusing them of human rights violations. The government has denied any wrongdoing and claimed Amini’s death was due to pre-existing medical conditions. Women in Iran continue to face strict regulations regarding their clothing and public behavior, with severe consequences for those who do not comply.
