Indianapolis Unveils Innovative Snow Removal Plan – Latest Updates on Indianapolis News, Indiana Weather, and Traffic Conditions

The Indianapolis City-County Council has proposed changes to the city’s snow removal policy in response to public complaints about unplowed residential streets during recent snowstorms. The current “Connector Policy” prioritizes main roads for plowing, leaving many residential streets uncleared. The proposed “Priority Snow Clearance Ordinance” aims to establish a 4-inch standard for plowing residential streets for the rest of the season. The ordinance would maintain the current priority levels for plowing streets, with first-priority streets being main roads and streets near essential services. The proposal also calls for the Department of Public Works to create a comprehensive snow removal policy, including a financial statement and real-time tracking of priority bike infrastructure. The proposal will be discussed at a Public Works Committee meeting on March 13. Mayor Joe Hogsett has already announced the decision to adopt the 4-inch standard for the rest of the season, setting clear expectations for snow removal in residential areas. The proposal does not change the declaration of snow emergencies or parking prohibitions during those times. Residents hope the new policy will ensure better snow removal on all city streets in the future.
