Muslims in East DR Congo observing Ramadan amidst a climate of war

Muslims in the city of Bukavu in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are facing a more subdued Ramadan this year after the city was captured by Rwanda-backed fighters earlier this year. The city has a significant Muslim population, with around 15,000 families making up about five percent of the province’s population. This is the first Ramadan in Bukavu in a situation of distress and war, according to community leaders.

Due to security concerns, mosques in Bukavu have advised worshippers to pray at home after sunset, especially the Tarawih prayers typically carried out during Ramadan. The poor security situation has also forced people to break their fast in smaller groups, with many facing difficulties in accessing food supplies due to the closure of banks since the city was captured by the M23.

Imams and community leaders have expressed concern about the impact of the conflict on the Muslim community in Bukavu, with many families facing food shortages and having to adjust their Ramadan traditions due to the challenging circumstances. Despite these challenges, community members are continuing to observe Ramadan with prayers at home and smaller gatherings for the iftar meal. This is a difficult time for Muslims in Bukavu, but they are determined to maintain their faith and traditions in the face of adversity.
