Hoosiers can now participate in mobile lung screening program – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

The Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center and IU Health have launched the state’s first mobile lung screening program in an effort to improve early detection of lung cancer. Dr. Michele Saysana, interim president of IU Health Metro Region, stated that the program will bring life-saving lung screenings directly to communities across Indiana, reducing barriers to care and expanding access to early detection.

The mobile screening unit, equipped with a CT scanner, will provide approximately 2,000 scans in 2025. It will start screening eligible high-risk Hoosiers in various counties, with scheduled stops in Blackford, Jay, Bartholomew, Clark, Ohio, and Hancock counties. Dr. Nasser Hanna emphasized that early diagnosis of lung cancer can significantly reduce mortality rates and save lives.

The program was made possible by a donation from the Tom and Julie Wood Family Foundation to the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center and IU Health Foundation. Julie Wood expressed gratitude for being part of the effort to eradicate lung cancer, in memory of her late husband who died of the disease in 2010.

The initiative aims to decrease the mortality rate of lung cancer by 20% through early detection with low-dose CT scans. The Wood family’s contribution to the program reflects a commitment to saving Hoosiers from the devastating effects of lung cancer.
