President Donald Trump’s recent speech was met with tempered positivity by the largely Republican audience who tuned in, as shown in a CNN poll. While most viewers felt that Trump’s policies would move the country in the right direction, fewer expressed strong confidence in his ability to provide real leadership or use his presidential power responsibly. Despite this, roughly 70% of speech-watchers had a somewhat positive reaction to his speech.
The audience had a negative reaction to a protest effort from a Democratic member of Congress, with 80% viewing it as inappropriate. Before the speech, 61% of viewers approved of Trump’s handling of the presidency overall, but this did not significantly increase after the speech.
Most viewers believed Trump’s policies on immigration would take America in the right direction, compared to his proposals on changing the government, the economy, and tariffs. Additionally, many speech-watchers aligned with Trump’s approach to Ukraine and Russia.
While Trump’s speech did not lead to a significant shift in public opinion, historical data shows that first-year addresses to Congress tend to be better rated than later speeches. The CNN poll was conducted with 431 US adults who watched the speech and has a margin of error of 5.3 percentage points.
