Expert shares top strategies to reverse fatty liver | Health

As Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) becomes a prevalent global health concern, affecting an estimated 38% of the population, experts are emphasizing the importance of prevention and treatment strategies. Dr. Gyanranjan Rout, a Consultant-Medical Gastroenterologist, highlighted the link between NAFLD and obesity, diabetes, and sedentary lifestyles in an interview with HT Lifestyle. Although NAFLD can be asymptomatic in its early stages, it can progress to severe conditions such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, or liver cancer if left untreated.

While specific drugs for NAFLD are not yet approved, lifestyle changes such as weight loss through a healthy diet and exercise are recommended as the mainstay of treatment. Additionally, controlling comorbid conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia is essential. Some treatments, such as Saroglitazar, vitamin E, and obeticholic acid, have shown promising results in improving liver function and reducing liver fat and inflammation.

Dr. Gyanranjan Rout emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and proactive measures in preventing and managing NAFLD. Combining lifestyle interventions, medical treatment for associated conditions, and ongoing research for new therapies can lead to improved outcomes for individuals with NAFLD. Readers are advised to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized medical advice and treatment.
