Indiana Governor Mike Braun has signed two new executive orders focusing on transgender Hoosiers, following similar decisions by President Trump and the NCAA. Executive Order 25-35 bans transgender women and girls from participating in women or girls sports at Indiana schools, while Executive Order 25-36 states that there are only two genders – male and female. These orders follow a law passed in 2022 and a bill currently in the state legislature.
Braun defended the ban on transgender participation in women’s sports by emphasizing the importance of opportunities for young women and girls. However, Senator J.D. Ford criticized the use of government as a weapon against specific groups, advocating for dignity and respect for all individuals. Advocates for transgender rights expressed concerns about the potential for increased bullying and harassment.
The order also addresses birth certificates, stating that the Indiana Department of Health will push back on changes going forward. Those who have already changed their gender on their birth certificates or driver’s licenses will not be required to revert back, except for those with an X designation on their licenses.
Governor Braun emphasized Indiana’s refusal to adopt what he referred to as a radical new idea of gender and stated that tax dollars will not be used to promote this ideology. The Bureau of Motor Vehicles is updating guidance on their website to reflect the executive order, affecting over 230 Hoosiers with an X on their license.
