Former State Legislators not surprised by Statehouse culture of sexual harassment

Former State Senator Karen Tallian, who spent 16 years in the Indiana legislature, expressed that she was not surprised by the recent sexual harassment allegations against State Senator Greg Taylor. This sentiment was echoed by former State Rep. Mara Candelaria Reardon, who is one of four women suing former Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill for battery. Reardon emphasized her disappointment that little has changed in creating a safe environment at the statehouse since coming forward with allegations.

The accusations against Taylor include instances of unwanted physical contact and a sustained romantic pursuit of an intern over an eight-year period. Despite the knowledge of these allegations by legislative leaders, Taylor was reelected as Senate Minority Leader. A similar lack of repercussions was seen when State Sen. David Niezgodski faced harassment allegations and voted to retain Taylor.

Tallian highlighted the ongoing culture of sexual harassment in the statehouse, despite some progress following allegations against Hill. She emphasized the need for a safe environment for staffers and elected officials to report such allegations. Reardon also called for changes such as independent human resources structures, clear reporting paths, and consequences for offenders.

A national study found that incidents of sexual harassment by state lawmakers have been prevalent since 2013, with a disproportionate impact on women by male offenders. The report emphasized the need for states to combat sexual harassment and increase transparency in addressing such issues. Reardon stressed the importance of both Democrats and Republicans working towards creating a workplace free from abuse and focused on positive policy-making.
