Indiana restricts participation in college sports based on gender identity recognition / Public News Service

Indiana Governor Mike Braun has issued executive orders that restrict state funds from promoting gender identity and ban transgender women from women’s college sports. The orders aim to enforce a 2020 Title IX rule, preventing transgender women from competing in women’s sports. The move follows President Donald Trump’s similar executive order in February and aims to address the state’s point of view on gender identity and participation in sports.

While some support these orders, transgender-rights advocates argue they unfairly target a small, vulnerable group. Critics say the policies prioritize politics over fairness, and legal challenges are expected to follow.

In another part of the country, the Women’s Foundation of the South is stepping up to address the funding gap for nonprofit organizations led by women of color. The foundation raises funds and awards grants to programs, services, and resources for Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and Asian women and girls across several southern states. They hope to expand their reach and positively impact millions of women and girls of color by 2031.

Meanwhile, New Mexico’s upcoming legislative session will make history with the largest percentage of women in the U.S. Female legislators will hold a 54% majority, reflecting voters electing 11 more women in the last election. This increased representation aims to bring a more comprehensive discussion of issues, as women lawmakers often bring forward concerns related to family, children, and education.

In South Dakota, voters will soon decide on Amendment E, which aims to adjust the state Constitution’s language to be more inclusive of officeholders. Despite some opposition, supported by state lawmakers, the amendment aims to celebrate women’s achievements in leadership roles.
