Indiana is taking steps to improve its recycling rates, which currently stand at 19%, below the national average of 35%. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has awarded $3.7 million through the Recycling Market Development Program (RMDP) to five organizations in central Indiana to enhance recycling efforts. These projects will focus on recycling sensitive items such as electric vehicle batteries, solar panels, and construction materials.
One of the grant recipients, Republic Services, plans to utilize the funding to implement advanced artificial intelligence technology to increase the volume and quality of recycled plastics. This initiative will support the circular economy in Indiana and create more high-quality recycled feedstock for manufacturers in the state.
Deanna Garner of IDEM emphasized the broader benefits of these recycling initiatives, including job creation, pollution reduction, and keeping the environment clean for Indiana. Residents are encouraged to participate in recycling programs, whether through local drop-off sites or residential collection services. Overall, these investments aim to improve recycling accessibility and promote sustainability in Indiana.
