Indiana woman confesses involvement in murder-for-hire scheme, could serve 20 years

A woman from Clinton, Indiana, has pleaded guilty to her involvement in a murder-for-hire plot and admitted to using interstate facilities to arrange the crime. Davetta Cox, 32, made her plea on March 7, 2025, and is awaiting sentencing on July 18, 2025, at the U.S. Courthouse in Urbana, Illinois.

During a hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Eric I. Long, Cox confessed to trying to hire someone she believed to be a hitman to kill another individual, offering $6,000 for the murder. She was arrested in January 2024 and is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Cox faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $500,000, and up to six years of supervised release. The case was investigated by the FBI’s Springfield Field Office, Champaign Resident Agency, and the Illinois State Police, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Rachel Ritzer prosecuting.

This shocking case highlights the seriousness of engaging in criminal activities, especially murder-for-hire schemes. Cox’s guilty plea serves as a reminder of the consequences individuals face when attempting to orchestrate violent acts.
