Indiana University is currently investigating allegations of inappropriate behavior against former team physician and IU Athletics Hall of Fame member Brad Bomba Sr. The allegations were made by a former men’s basketball student-athlete who competed several decades ago. The student-athlete claims he was subjected to inappropriate prostate and rectal exams during physicals with Bomba Sr., a practice allegedly common among basketball student-athletes. Bomba served as a physician for IU’s sports teams from 1962-1970 and as the men’s basketball physician from 1979 to the late 1990s.
Indiana University has retained the international law firm Jones Day to conduct an independent review of the allegations. The investigation will involve witness interviews, document reviews, and discussions with medical experts to determine the facts related to the physical exams, whether the conduct was appropriate, and who within the university or athletic department was aware of the behavior and the actions taken.
The university released a statement emphasizing the independent and comprehensive nature of the investigation and their commitment to abiding by the findings and taking any necessary actions. They have refrained from further comment to protect the integrity of the review process. Those with information related to the case are encouraged to contact sports@idsnews.com.
