Newsmax agreed to pay Smartmatic $40 million in a settlement last year following a defamation lawsuit by the voting technology company. The settlement included a cash payment and an option to purchase stock in Newsmax. The company has already made payments totaling $20 million and will pay the rest by July. Newsmax stated that the settlement will eliminate future legal expenses related to the suit. The lawsuit was centered on Newsmax’s false claims that Smartmatic manipulated the 2020 election in favor of Joe Biden. Smartmatic also settled a defamation lawsuit against One America News for an undisclosed sum. Smartmatic’s lawyer stated that they are focused on a similar case against Fox News and look forward to presenting evidence to a jury. Fox News’ parent company settled a defamation claim with Dominion Voting Systems for $787.5 million. Newsmax did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The details of the settlement shed light on the confidential agreement reached between Newsmax and Smartmatic.
