Rep. Pramila Jayapal Proposes Legislation to Hinder Trump’s Undocumented Immigrant List

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., introduced the “No Round Up Act” bill to prevent the Trump administration from using the Alien Registration Act of 1940, which allowed for the forced incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, to build a current registry of undocumented immigrants. The Trump administration has announced a policy requiring undocumented immigrants to register, give fingerprints, and provide an address or potentially face prosecution, using the WWII-era act as a basis. Jayapal’s bill, co-sponsored by over 20 Democratic lawmakers, aims to repeal this act and prevent the mass deportation of immigrants. Many organizations, including the ACLU, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, and the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, have endorsed the bill. The bill also highlights the controversial National Security Entry-Exit Registration System implemented after 9/11, which targeted men from mostly Muslim and Arab-majority countries and resulted in racial profiling without any terrorism convictions. Jayapal emphasized the shameful history associated with the Alien Registration Act of 1940 and expressed concerns over the Trump administration’s use of this policy targeting immigrants. The proposed registry is set to go into effect on April 11 and has been met with criticism and opposition from various groups and lawmakers.
