A group of volunteers searching for their missing relatives made a gruesome discovery last week in western Mexico. They found a mass grave at an abandoned ranch outside La Estanzuela, containing three underground cremation ovens, burned human remains, bone fragments, and discarded personal items. The site, referred to as an “extermination camp,” also contained 96 shell casings and metal gripping rings.
The authorities are currently investigating the site, and President Claudia Sheinbaum has requested the Attorney General’s Office to take over the case. The discovery has shocked Mexicans and human rights groups, highlighting the ongoing issue of violence and mass graves in the country.
The ranch is believed to have been operated by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, a major criminal organization in Mexico involved in drug trafficking, human trafficking, and extortion. Members of the Searching Warriors of Jalisco who found the site reported that it was used for training recruits in weapons and torture techniques, as well as for disposing of victims.
The investigation into the ranch site raises questions about the local authorities’ previous knowledge of the location, as they had found weapons, bone fragments, and rescued kidnap victims there last September. President Sheinbaum has suggested that the authorities may have been negligent in their initial investigation, prompting a renewed effort to uncover the truth behind the mass grave.
