Private moon lander loses communication following successful two-week lunar mission

Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost lander successfully completed its two-week mission for NASA on the moon’s far northeastern edge before losing power during the lunar sunset. The lander, which carried 10 science experiments, including a drill and vacuum, observed a total lunar eclipse from the moon and confirmed that all experiments worked. The Texas-based company became the first private company to land on the moon without incident.
In contrast, other companies have experienced failed missions in recent years, such as Intuitive Machines, whose lander ended up sideways in a crater near the moon’s south pole. Firefly’s success marks a significant milestone in private lunar exploration, with plans for another lunar lander already in the works to achieve one moon landing per year. Only five countries have successfully landed on the moon, with Japan’s ispace also planning an early June touchdown on the moon. Firefly CEO Jason Kim expressed pride in Blue Ghost’s achievements and its lasting impact on the company. Photos of the lunar sunset and glow captured by the lander will be released soon, showcasing the unique perspective from the moon’s surface.
