Expansion of Indiana’s Lifeline Law awaits governor’s approval

Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville) is leading the charge to expand Indiana’s Lifeline Law, which provides immunity from underage drinking charges to individuals who seek help for others, but not for the underage drinker themselves. The proposed bill, SB 74, would close this gap by extending immunity to underage drinkers facing medical issues as well. Under the Lifeline Law, immunity would cover offenses such as public intoxication, minor possession, minor consumption, and minor transportation of alcohol.

Rep. Carey Hamilton (D-Indianapolis) expressed support for the bill, noting that her son, a resident advisor at Indiana University, believes it will save lives in the state. The House overwhelmingly voted 87-3 to pass the bill and send it to the governor’s desk for approval.

If signed into law, the expansion of the Lifeline Law could potentially help prevent tragic outcomes related to underage drinking by ensuring that young individuals feel safe seeking medical assistance without fear of legal repercussions. The efforts of Rep. McNamara and other lawmakers reflect a commitment to protecting the well-being of Indiana’s youth and promoting a culture of safety and accountability.
