South Bend man, Ramon Villalba-Huerta, was charged with arson and auto theft after setting his father’s house on fire and stealing a fire department vehicle. The incident occurred early Thursday morning in South Bend, Indiana. Villalba-Huerta admitted to setting a couch on fire inside the house, resulting in its destruction. He then took a marked vehicle belonging to the South Bend Fire Department’s 102nd Battalion while firefighters were responding to the blaze. The fire, reported at 4:30 a.m. on Carroll Street, caused damage to a neighboring house as well. Villalba-Huerta was later found with the stolen fire vehicle on East Calvert Street. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries. He is currently being held at the St. Joseph County jail and faces charges of auto theft and two counts of arson. The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office filed the charges, although a case has not yet been shown in online court records. The motive behind the arson and theft remains unclear.
