Radical Stitch, an exhibition showcasing contemporary bead art from Native American and Indigenous artists, is set to open in downtown Indianapolis in April. The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art will host the exhibition, which features 100 works highlighting techniques, designs, and themes that address current issues. The art on display represents various thematic strands, including pop culture references, food sovereignty, and Indigenous Futurism.
Beadwork has a long history in North America, dating back to the early 1800s as trade goods. Over the years, glass beads have become an important artistic medium for Native artists, combining historic cultural traditions with contemporary expressions. The exhibition will run from April 12 through August 3, with opening day events including a public gallery talk, panel discussion, and artist demonstration.
Admission to the museum is free for enrolled members of Native American tribes and Indiana college, university, and trade school students. General admission tickets range from $12 to $20. The exhibition is sponsored by the Avis Foundation, Capital Group, and other organizations, with support from the Consulate General of Canada in Detroit and the Canada Council for the Arts.
Visitors can also enjoy free parking in an underground garage while exploring the diverse and innovative bead art on display at Radical Stitch.
