A man in Gary, Indiana, was arrested by Lake County Sheriff’s Department deputies after using his ex-girlfriend’s 15-month-old toddler as a human shield during a hostage situation. The incident began when the woman called 911 to report that her ex-boyfriend, a convicted felon, was armed and threatening to shoot her and the police. The woman and her three children were inside the apartment at the time. The Lake County Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) was called to the scene. After the mother and two of her children were able to leave safely, SWAT officers entered the apartment and found the suspect hiding in a bathtub with the toddler. The man resisted arrest, and a taser was used to subdue him. The suspect was taken into custody and could face charges including criminal confinement, stalking, resisting arrest, and weapons violations. The handgun was retrieved from a vehicle registered to the suspect. The mother and her children were medically evaluated at the scene. The identity of the suspect was not released by investigators.
