North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently observed tests of reconnaissance and attack drones, calling for increased production. The drones demonstrated the ability to track multiple targets, monitor troop movements, and conduct attack missions with artificial intelligence capabilities. Kim approved plans to expand production, naming drones and AI as top priorities for advancing his armed forces in modern warfare. These tests took place during Kim’s visits to a drone technology complex and an electronic warfare research group.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have been escalating, as Kim expands his military capabilities, including various nuclear-capable weapons targeting South Korea and potentially reaching the U.S. mainland. Kim’s alignment with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine has raised concerns that he may receive technology transfers, further strengthening his nuclear-armed military. The South Korean Defense Ministry did not immediately comment on the North Korean report.
Additionally, North Korea accused South Korea of sending drones to drop anti-North Korean propaganda leaflets over Pyongyang last year. Kim has been emphasizing drone development, with previous demonstrations of exploding drones in November and August. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that North Korea sent around 3,000 additional troops to Russia in early 2022, providing ammunition and weaponry support for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Around 4,000 North Korean troops deployed to Ukraine have been killed or injured.
