Maui physician arrested for attempted murder of spouse

Dr. Gerhardt Konig, a 46-year-old anesthesiologist, has been charged with second-degree attempted murder after allegedly trying to push his wife off a hiking trail and hitting her with a rock in Honolulu. He is being held on a $5 million bond and it is not clear if he has entered a plea or retained a lawyer. Konig fled the scene but was arrested about eight hours later after a foot pursuit. His wife, a project manager at TerraPower, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Konig still holds his medical license in Hawaii, with a LinkedIn profile showing him as a partner in an anesthesia medical group in Maui. Prior to this, he was a professor and clinical instructor at the University of Pittsburgh. Both the University of Pittsburgh and Konig’s employer in Maui have not responded to requests for comment. Konig’s wife holds a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from Penn State and an MBA from Pitt. They got married in 2018.
