The search for four U.S. Army soldiers who went missing during a training session in Lithuania continued over the weekend. The soldiers disappeared after their M88 Hercules armored vehicle became submerged in a peat bog during a training exercise with Lithuanian armed forces and law enforcement. The vehicle was found more than 16 feet underwater the following day. The soldiers, who have not been identified, were from the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division.
Additional personnel and equipment, including specialized divers from the U.S. Navy, joined the search effort on Saturday. The goal is to find lifting points on the submerged vehicle. Lithuanian divers have already provided a site picture, and advanced equipment such as a submersible remotely operated vehicle and handheld sonar are being utilized. Polish engineers and recovery experts, along with Lithuanian geologists, also joined the search with heavy equipment to assist in mapping the area and preparing for dive operations.
Multiple helicopters, including UH-60M Blackhawks and CH-47 Chinooks, are being used to aid in the search operation. The focus on Saturday was on removing water and mud from the site, shoring up the ground, and preparing for dive operations. The Army continues to work alongside Lithuanian authorities to locate the missing soldiers.
