South Texas Experiences Three Fatalities Following Over a Foot of Rainfall in Rio Grande Valley

Three people died in Hidalgo County, Texas, after around 20 inches of rain caused catastrophic flooding in the Rio Grande Valley. The deaths occurred as a result of law enforcement efforts during the flooding. The state agriculture commissioner, Sid Miller, called the situation a devastating tragedy for the Valley community. One additional death was reported in Mexico due to the flooding.

The slow-moving upper-level trough over Mexico brought thunderstorms and rain to South Texas near the border, including Hidalgo County. The National Weather Service reported that no more significant rainfall was expected Friday night, but flooding was forecasted to continue.

Hidalgo, Cameron, Starr, and Willacy counties were the hardest hit, with extensive damage to homes, vehicles, infrastructure, and significant losses in agriculture and livestock. More than a foot of rain was recorded in parts of Hidalgo County, and the city of Harlingen in Cameron County saw over 21 ½ inches of rain, resulting in flooding and displacement of residents.

Emergency management efforts were being made to address the widespread damage in Hidalgo County, with progress being reported. Residents like Jionni Ochoa in Palm Valley shared their experiences of flooded homes and belongings. The community, including officials and residents, were urged to work together and stay strong in the face of this historic and challenging event.
