Plant-based Milk: A Better Option for Kidney Health?
In a world where dairy consumption has long been considered essential for strong bones and overall health, plant-based milk is emerging as a healthier alternative for those with kidney concerns. Nidhi Nahata, lifestyle coach and founder of vegan eatery JustBe, sheds light on the major risks dairy products pose for kidney health.
According to Nahata, dairy products, especially cow’s milk, contain high levels of phosphorus and casein protein, which can put significant stress on the kidneys, especially for individuals with kidney disease or a genetic tendency for kidney issues. Dairy also contributes to body acidity, leading to inflammation and impaired kidney function over time. Additionally, dairy has been linked to increased body swelling, worsening existing kidney conditions.
In light of these risks, Nahata recommends considering plant-based milk as a healthier alternative. Oat milk and soy milk are generally considered better options for kidney health than almond or coconut milk. Oat milk is low in phosphorus and lactose-free, making it suitable for individuals with kidney stones. Soy milk, rich in protein and low in phosphorus, offers a balanced and renal-friendly option.
While almond milk is popular, it contains high levels of oxalates, increasing the risk of kidney stones. Coconut milk, although delicious, is high in saturated fat, which may not be ideal for individuals with kidney concerns. Nahata suggests those with a history of kidney disease, kidney stones, inflammation due to dairy consumption, or a need to reduce phosphorus intake switch to plant-based milk for better kidney health in the long run.
Plant-based milk is not just a passing trend; it is a proactive choice for better health in the long term. By making mindful dietary choices today, individuals can support their kidney function and overall well-being.
