Kite seized after allegedly colliding with United aircraft in Washington region

United Flight 654 was hit by a kite near Reagan National Airport, but landed safely with no damage to the aircraft. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police confiscated a kite in Gravelly Point due to restricted airspace. The incident occurred as multiple kites were flying near the airport. The kite hit the plane between an engine and the fuselage, but no charges were filed against the family flying the kite. Kite flying near airports is prohibited by federal regulations, with no notices issued for the area near Reagan National on Saturday. This incident comes after several aviation crashes and near-misses this year, including a collision between an American Airlines jet and a U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopter near the airport. The National Park Service, which oversees Gravelly Point, warned against kite-flying in the area. The incident did not affect the Blossom Kite Festival at the National Mall celebrating spring. United Flight 654 departed from Houston and arrived at Reagan National slightly behind schedule. Authorities repudiated the incident and emphasized the importance of adhering to aviation regulations to prevent accidents and ensure passenger safety.
