D-day Approaching for Afghan Refugees Facing Deportation from Pakistan: ‘This is Our Home’

Pakistan is facing criticism for its plan to deport Afghan nationals, including those who have lived in the country for decades. Mohammad Laal Khan, a 36-year-old Afghan who has spent his entire life in Pakistan, is one of those facing expulsion. He, along with his family, has endured police raids and threats of deportation, despite possessing Afghan Citizenship Cards issued by the government. Khan’s family, like many others, faces the prospect of being uprooted from the only home they have known.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s office has outlined a three-phase deportation plan, targeting undocumented Afghans, including ACC holders, and PoR cardholders. The deadline for deportation is set for April 1, prompting criticism from human rights organizations such as HRW and Amnesty International. The Pakistani government remains firm in its stance, citing security concerns and the need to address issues related to Afghan nationals.

Individuals like Benazir Raofi, who have built a life in Pakistan through businesses and community initiatives, now face uncertainty and fear of being forced to leave. Raofi, who runs a successful cafe, fears losing everything she has worked for if forced to return to Afghanistan.

Despite the looming deportation deadline, many Afghans living in Pakistan are standing firm in their resolve to stay. They see Pakistan as their home and are unwilling to leave, despite the challenges they face. The situation highlights the plight of Afghan refugees who have built lives in Pakistan but are now at risk of being uprooted from the only home they have known.
