ICE agent held in contempt and case dismissed midtrial due to defendant’s detention by judge

A man named William Martell Lebron was taken into federal custody by ICE agents in the middle of his criminal trial on charges of providing false information on a license application. A state judge in Boston dismissed the case against him and found an ICE agent in contempt of court, citing prosecutorial misconduct. Defense attorney Murat Erkan called the incident obstruction of justice and alleged a plan involving the state to deport his client. The Suffolk District Attorney’s Office expressed dismay and surprise at ICE’s actions, stating that they were pursuing ethical prosecutions to hold offenders accountable and treat victims with dignity. The district attorney’s office contacted ICE as soon as they learned of the detention and requested Martell Lebron’s return to court, filing a motion to demand his appearance at trial. The district attorney’s office denied any claim that they were aware of an attempt to prevent Martell Lebron from exercising his right to a trial. Martell Lebron’s lawyer alleges that prosecutors were warned about ICE’s plans to detain his client but did not inform him. ICE stated that Martell Lebron is a Dominican national using an alias. A Boston Municipal Court judge held an emergency hearing, ordering ICE to return Martell Lebron to court for his trial.
