Macron calls on Algerian leader to show mercy for imprisoned writer

French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to show “mercy and humanity” towards jailed French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal. Macron made the plea during a phone call discussing bilateral ties and tensions between the two countries. Sansal, 80 years old and in fragile health due to cancer, was sentenced to five years in prison for an interview that was deemed to undermine Algeria’s territorial integrity. Macron has repeatedly called for Sansal’s release, while also working to repair strained relations between France and Algeria. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot is set to visit Algiers to strengthen ties, and the two leaders expressed a desire to resume cooperation on security and restore migration between the two countries. They also plan to revive a joint panel of historians to delve into the past between France and Algeria. Tebboune has expressed that Macron is the key to repairing relations between the two nations. Macron and Tebboune agreed to meet in person at a future date to further discuss these issues.
