Review of Apex Predator: A biting supernatural psychodrama that takes on too much Theatre Review: Apex Predator – A supernatural psychodrama overstretches its boundaries

John Donnelly’s new play, “Apex Predator,” delves into the complexities of early parenthood and the impact a baby’s arrival can have on a relationship. The play, set in London, follows Mia and Joe as they navigate the challenges of raising their 11-year-old son, Alfie, and their newborn, Isla, while Joe is frequently away for classified work. Mia is struggling with sleep deprivation and noisy neighbors, while Alfie is exhibiting troubling behavior at school.

The play takes a supernatural turn when Mia meets Ana, a mysterious woman who reveals herself to be a vampire. Ana offers to help Mia with her struggles in exchange for a favor, leading Mia down a dark path. Meanwhile, Joe discovers Ana’s true nature and sets out to stop her from harming his family.

Despite its intriguing premise, “Apex Predator” struggles to fully immerse the audience in its supernatural world. The production, directed by Blanche McIntyre, blends dark comedy with horror but fails to create a truly immersive experience. While Laura Whitmore delivers a chilling performance as Ana, the overall impact of the play falls short of its ambitious goals.

The performances of Sophie Melville as Mia and Bryan Dick as Joe are commendable, with their heated arguments and realistic portrayal of parental struggles adding depth to the story. However, the play’s supernatural elements, including vampires and online vampire hunting forums, feel disjointed and fail to fully integrate into the narrative.

Overall, “Apex Predator” offers a unique take on the challenges of parenthood but falls short in creating a cohesive and immersive theatrical experience. Despite strong performances from the cast, the play’s ambitious premise ultimately leaves the audience wanting more.
