Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has dismissed the idea of direct negotiations with the United States regarding Iran’s nuclear program, calling it “meaningless” in light of escalating tensions between the two countries. This comes after President Trump expressed hope for negotiations in a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader and even threatened bombing if a deal is not reached.
Araghchi criticized Washington’s sincerity in calling for negotiations while simultaneously threatening military action, stating that negotiations should be conducted on an “equal footing.” Iran has maintained that it is not seeking nuclear weapons and has rejected direct negotiations with the US, instead opting for indirect diplomacy.
The US, along with other Western countries, has long accused Tehran of seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. After Trump pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran began rolling back its commitments under the agreement and has amassed enough material for multiple bombs, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
In response to Trump’s threats of war, the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that the country is prepared for any conflict but will not be the initiators. However, Iran’s regional position has recently weakened due to ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria.
Iran continues to assert that its nuclear activities are for civilian purposes only, while Israel, a key US ally in the region, is believed to possess an undeclared nuclear arsenal. The war of words between the US and Iran over the nuclear issue remains unresolved, with neither side showing signs of backing down.
