Shelbyville issues new evacuation orders as rivers reach major flood stage

Multiple agencies in Shelbyville, Indiana, are evacuating areas due to rising water levels and major flooding. The areas facing evacuation include Walkerville, the south side of the Big Blue River, including Indiana Avenue and Eastern Avenue, and Walnut Grove Campground off of London Road. River Road is closed to all traffic, and Shelby County officials have issued a mandatory evacuation order for low-lying areas prone to flooding.

As of 6 p.m. on Saturday, the Big Blue River measured 17.77 feet, nearing major flood stage, with an expected overnight crest. The Little Blue River is currently in major flood stage, exceeding its historical crest. Shelbyville Fire Department Lieutenant Bradley Rund stated that their teams are working to keep people safe and urged those in flood-prone areas to evacuate immediately.

Shelbyville first responders, along with Indiana State Police and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, are actively working on evacuations. The official emergency evacuation site is the Shelby County Fairgrounds, while sandbags are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Shelbyville Street Department.

Residents are urged to stay clear of flooded roadways and allow emergency responders to do their work. The city is urging the community to assist in keeping everyone safe during this dangerous flooding situation.
