EU trade minister close to finalizing first round of retaliatory tariffs against US

Trade ministers meeting in Luxembourg are close to finalizing a list of US goods to target in response to the recent tariffs imposed by the US on steel and aluminum. However, a second round of tariffs, aimed at responding to additional US tariffs on other imports and cars, is still being debated.

The initial retaliatory measures, expected to be adopted on Wednesday, may include US products like bourbon whiskey. However, there is uncertainty about whether whiskey will be included due to threats from President Trump to impose 200% tariffs on European wines and spirits if it remains on the list.

France, Italy, and Spain have advocated for the removal of whiskey from the list to prevent escalating tensions with the US. EU leaders are emphasizing the need for a proportionate response to protect the most exposed EU economies and avoid negative impacts on industries.

The retaliatory tariffs are set to be phased in starting April 15, with a second wave planned for May 15. The EU hopes that these measures will encourage the US to come to the negotiating table, signaling the bloc’s readiness to stand firm in the trade dispute.

While the first round of tariffs is expected to be finalized soon, discussions around a potential “plan B” to address US tariffs on cars and other sectors are ongoing. The EU aims to present a united front in negotiations with the US, striking a balance between firmness and diplomatic relations. Leaders are determined to avoid a trade war but are prepared to escalate if necessary.
