Indiana Natives Help UConn Win 2025 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship

Indiana natives Ashlynn Shade and Ayanna Patterson played key roles in helping the UConn Huskies secure a 82-59 victory over South Carolina to win the 2025 NCAA women’s basketball Div. I title. Shade, from Noblesville, Ind., contributed 4 points in the championship game, while averaging 7.8 points and 2.7 rebounds per game throughout the season. Patterson, a Fort Wayne native, unfortunately missed the season due to a shoulder injury.

This victory marked UConn’s 12th women’s basketball championship, the most in both Div. I men’s and women’s basketball history. Head coach Geno Auriemma, who has led the team to all 12 titles, became the oldest coach in history to win a national championship at 71 years old.

Guard Azzi Fudd and forward Sarah Strong led UConn in the championship game, with Fudd being named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player. Paige Bueckers, another UConn guard, celebrated her first championship win in her final collegiate game.

The team expressed pride in their hard work, teamwork, and resilience throughout the season. Despite facing challenges, the players remained connected and determined to achieve success both individually and as a team.
