Businesses and residents in downtown Aurora, Indiana are currently dealing with potentially record-high water levels as the Ohio River continues to rise. In response to the escalating situation, the bridge at State Route 350 near US-50 has been closed by the Dearborn County Sheriff. Local businesses along 3rd and Main streets are inundated with water, causing several to shut down.
One business owner, Matthew Baldwin of ‘Stinky’s Stitchin’, has taken precautions by placing sandbags outside his shop and moving important items to a U-Haul for protection. Over 90 volunteers, including high school athletes and community leaders, have come together to distribute food and sandbags in an effort to keep homes and businesses safe. Mayor Patrick Schwing is concerned that water levels may surpass the city’s 2018 flood record, and is urging residents to heed road closure signs and avoid driving through flooded areas.
The collective efforts of the community in Aurora are aimed at mitigating the impact of the flooding, with the hope that the water levels do not exceed 60 feet. Despite the challenges posed by the rising river, residents are coming together to ensure the safety of their city and support one another during this difficult time.
