Sebastian Southerland, a 30-year-old man from Hartford City, attempted to evade arrest by jumping into the White River in Anderson after fleeing a traffic stop for speeding on I-69. Despite the high water levels and rapid current, the Anderson Fire Department conducted a dramatic rescue to save Southerland from the river. He was found clinging to a pile of brush and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. An Anderson firefighter was injured during the rescue but has since been released from the hospital.
Southerland, who was wanted on an active arrest warrant for dealing methamphetamine, now faces multiple charges including resisting arrest with a vehicle, resisting arrest causing injury, reckless driving, and operating while intoxicated. Indiana State Police reported that the chase began when Southerland was clocked at 89 mph in a 70 mph zone and led police on a chase through Chesterfield and Anderson, ultimately abandoning his vehicle and jumping into the river.
The incident highlights the dangers posed by attempting to evade arrest and the risks involved in high-speed chases. The quick response by the Anderson Fire Department ultimately saved Southerland’s life, despite the challenges presented by the treacherous river conditions. Investigations into the incident are ongoing as Southerland remains under police supervision at the hospital.
